Two people found dead during well being check in Adams County
Adams County deputies discovered two people dead during a welfare check on December 17, 2025, prompting a joint investigation by local and state agencies. The deaths appeared to involve head trauma in one case and an apparent gunshot in the other, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to residents.

Adams County law enforcement responded to Wintersteen Run Road on the evening of December 17 after a welfare call led deputies to a residence where one person was found deceased on a porch with what appeared to be head trauma. While officers were attempting contact at a nearby home, a gunshot was heard from inside and a second person was later found dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
Steve Irwin, a spokesperson for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations, said BCI had been called in to assist the sheriff’s office with a "questioned death investigation." The Adams County Sheriff’s Office and BCI are leading the inquiry, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol Special Response Team SRT was also called to assist as investigators processed both scenes. Authorities described the incident as isolated and said they did not believe there was any ongoing threat to the public.
Officials have not released the names of the deceased or a possible motive while evidence is collected and forensic work continues. Deputies said the initial response began after a welfare report and emergency units arrived on scene later that evening. Investigators expected to provide additional updates once they secured and examined the properties and gathered more information.
For Adams County residents the episode underscores persistent challenges in rural public safety and health systems, including how welfare checks are conducted for older adults, the need for coordinated crisis response resources, and the limited access to mental health and social services that can complicate preventive efforts. Families caring for elderly relatives may face barriers in getting timely help, and small departments often rely on regional and state teams for complex scenes and technical investigation support.
The sheriff’s office and BCI involvement aims to ensure a thorough, independent review while preserving the integrity of the investigation. Local leaders say transparency and follow up on community supports will be important in the weeks ahead as neighbors seek answers and services to prevent future tragedies. Additional updates will be released as investigators complete their work.
