Alamance Regional Medical Center on Huffman Mill Road has earned Healthgrades' 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award, placing the Burlington hospital among the top 5% of nearly 4,500 hospitals evaluated nationwide. Healthgrades announced the recipients on March 10, with Alamance Regional securing the recognition for the third consecutive year after also winning in 2024 and 2025.

"This is the third year in a row that Alamance Regional has achieved this level of excellence," said Alamance Regional President Chad Boore. "Our doctors, our nurses, really the entire team, has made exceptional, compassionate care part of our culture."

To identify national leaders in patient safety, Healthgrades analyzed risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates across 13 patient safety indicators, each representing a serious, preventable complication. The numbers behind the distinction carry real weight for patients choosing where to receive care. According to Healthgrades, patients treated at a top-rated hospital are 52.4% less likely to suffer an in-hospital fall resulting in a fracture, 57.5% less likely to experience a collapsed lung from a chest procedure, 67.8% less likely to acquire a catheter-related bloodstream infection, and 71.9% less likely to develop pressure sores during their stay.

Dr. Alana Biggers, medical advisor at Healthgrades, framed those figures in terms of what they mean across thousands of patients. "The data behind this year's Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications," Biggers said. "By prioritizing evidence-based safety practices, Alamance Regional is achieving better clinical outcomes and cultivating a culture where patients come first."

The patient safety honor is one of several Healthgrades recognized at Alamance Regional for 2026. The hospital also received Outpatient Joint Replacement Excellence, Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Excellence, and Outpatient Prostate Care Excellence awards this year. The CDC has estimated that 1.7 million infections are acquired in hospitals or doctors' offices annually, with those infections, falls, and errors leading to longer hospital stays, increased intensive care, and deaths.

One area where Alamance Regional's Healthgrades profile shows room for growth is patient experience: its rating sits 11% below the national average, a metric Healthgrades weighs alongside clinical outcomes when evaluating hospitals.

Alamance Regional Medical Center is located at 1240 Huffman Mill Rd, Burlington, and can be reached at (336) 538-7000.
