Burlington firefighters rescue bedridden resident from East Sixth Street house fire
A bedridden resident was pulled from an East Sixth Street house fire before flames took over, and crews had the blaze controlled in about 15 minutes.

Burlington firefighters reached a house at 149 E. Sixth St. in under two minutes and found light smoke curling from the home while learning that someone inside could not get out alone. Because the resident was bedridden, crews moved fast to rescue the person first, then turned to extinguishing the fire.
The Burlington Fire Department said it was dispatched at 12:58 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and brought the blaze under control in about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported. The cause remained under investigation.

Burlington Police Department officers and Alamance County EMS assisted at the scene, part of the kind of fast, multi-agency response that can decide whether a house fire becomes a fatal emergency. In this case, the narrow margin between smoke and flame mattered. A resident who could not evacuate on their own was removed before the fire fully spread, preventing what could have been a far more serious tragedy on East Sixth Street in Burlington.
The incident also underscores a daily danger for medically fragile residents across Alamance County. House fires move quickly, and people who are bedridden, use oxygen, or depend on mobility aids may have only seconds to escape. Alamance County EMS advises residents to keep medical information forms visible in the home, such as on the refrigerator, so emergency personnel can quickly identify health conditions and needs if someone is unable to respond.
The Burlington Fire Department says its emergency response division handles fire suppression, medical emergencies and other calls throughout the city, with a mission to preserve life and property through emergency response, fire prevention and public education. The department’s 2025 annual report says call volume has increased 43% over the past 15 years, a reminder of how often local crews are asked to stop small incidents from becoming major losses.
The Alamance County Fire Marshal’s Office, which works to reduce fires through education, prevention, investigation and fire-service support, is expected to review the cause of the East Sixth Street blaze along with other agencies. For Burlington, the outcome Saturday was measured not in damage, but in the fact that a bedridden resident got out alive.
