Western Alamance freshman Lathan Cobb finished ninth in the Class 5-A boys’ golf state tournament, carding a 4-over-par 147 over two rounds at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington. Cobb shot 74 and 73 on the par-72, 6,620-yard course, and his finish stood out not just as a top-10 state result, but as the best individual showing among Alamance County golfers.

The championships were held May 11-12, with Sapona hosting the combined 5A and 6A events. Cobb’s score placed him in a field that produced low numbers at the top, including Franklin’s Tanner Jones at 146 and Fike’s Charlie Thurston at 148, but the Western Alamance freshman still landed inside the state’s top 10.

Alamance County was represented across several schools. Southeast Alamance junior Trevor Fowler tied for 13th in 5A at 152 after rounds of 75 and 77. Eastern Alamance senior Max Breler finished 22nd at 159. In the 6A field, Southern Alamance junior Kaden Long tied for 13th at 149 after rounds of 75 and 74. Williams senior Tim Klein and Southern senior Landon Linch also posted county results in the championship field.

At the team level, Oak Grove won the 5A title with a 594 total, six shots ahead of South Point’s 600. Oak Grove senior Lincoln Newton won the individual championship at 135, finishing seven under par. Those results underscored how demanding the state field was, and they made Cobb’s ninth-place finish as a freshman even more notable.

For Alamance County, Cobb’s breakthrough adds to a recent run of state-level relevance in boys’ golf. Southern Alamance finished 10th as a team in the 2024 state tournament, and that Patriots lineup included Long and Linch, giving the county a track record of sending players into meaningful postseason competition. Cobb’s finish now gives Western Alamance its own benchmark and suggests the county’s golf depth is extending beyond one school or one senior class.
