Operation 70 East Probe Nets Six Arrests in Alamance County
Six people were arrested after Operation 70 East exposed an alleged multi-county gang tied to drug and weapons distribution. The probe began after a non-fatal student overdose in 2024.

Six arrests announced by the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office mark a major development in a months-long investigation into suspected drug distribution and gang activity across Alamance, Caswell and Orange counties. The probe, known as Operation 70 East, began after a non-fatal overdose involving a student in 2024 and culminated in searches that yielded drugs, cash and weapons.
Arrested and named in court documents were Jennifer Lynn Baker, 24; Leopoldo Adrian Vargas, 27; Ernesto Santoyo Garcia Jr., 40; Tabitha Renee Santoyo Garcia, 38; Kentrell Deangelo Jordan Faucette, 32; and Ian Keanu Johnson, 21. Charges reported include trafficking in cocaine; felony possession of Schedule VI controlled substances; conspiracy to deliver marijuana; other delivery and possession-related counts; maintain or keep a dwelling for controlled substances; and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation remains open as prosecutors continue to file charges.

Sheriff Terry Johnson characterized the investigation as an example of cross-jurisdictional cooperation, noting that evidence pointed to an alleged street gang operating under the name 70 East with ties across county lines. Law enforcement officials said the probe uncovered an overlap between drug distribution, vaping products and firearms that raised concerns about criminal activity spilling into schools and neighborhoods.
For Alamance County residents, the case underscores several local risks. The initial overdose involved a student, signaling the penetration of illicit substances into youth circles and raising alarms for parents, school administrators and community organizations. The presence of weapons and cash in conjunction with suspected distribution networks elevates public safety concerns beyond simple possession cases and highlights how multi-county criminal networks can complicate enforcement and prevention efforts at the neighborhood level.
The arrests follow investigative work that stretched over months and incorporated resources from neighboring jurisdictions. Searches executed during Operation 70 East resulted in seizures of narcotics, currency and firearms, though officials have not released detailed inventories or quantities as the investigation and charging process continue. Court filings list the array of charges, but formal indictments and arraignments will clarify the specific allegations each defendant faces.
As the case proceeds, residents can expect periodic updates as prosecutors file additional charges and as courts schedule hearings. The law enforcement emphasis on interagency cooperation suggests continuing investigations into related activity across Alamance, Caswell and Orange counties. For community members, the immediate takeaway is twofold: pressure on local schools and youth programs to reinforce substance misuse prevention, and a reminder that cross-county collaboration is now a central part of addressing organized distribution networks in our region.
