Laramie Animal Welfare Society and Motive Coffee hosted a Coffee for a Cause Perk and Pet event on Saturday November 29 at Motive Coffee, 507 E. Ivinson Avenue. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. community members met adoptable animals while a portion of morning sales benefited core LAWS programs including foster and adoption services, trap neuter return efforts, and assistance for families who need help caring for pets.

The event coincided with Laramie Main Street’s Small Business Saturday activities, offering a local shopping connection that directed foot traffic into support for animal welfare. LAWS also provided virtual options to meet adoptable cats, extending access for residents who could not attend in person and reducing barriers related to transportation, work schedules, or mobility.

Beyond matching pets with homes, the event carried public health significance for Albany County. Trap neuter return programs are a recognized tool for reducing uncontrolled population growth in community cat colonies, lowering disease transmission risks and easing pressure on shelter capacity. Expanding foster and adoption pathways helps decrease overcrowding at shelters, which can reduce stress related illnesses in animals and improve live release rates.

Providing family assistance addresses equity in pet ownership. Low income households often face difficult choices when veterinary expenses or basic supplies become unaffordable. Programs that subsidize care or help families keep their pets contribute to community stability, prevent pet relinquishment, and preserve the documented mental and emotional benefits of companion animals for children, seniors, and people managing chronic illness.

For residents interested in follow up opportunities LAWS maintains information about upcoming events, adoption listings, and ways to support local programs on its website at laramie-animals.org. Community collaborations like Saturday’s event illustrate how small local businesses and nonprofit partners can combine resources to promote animal welfare, protect public health, and strengthen equitable access to pet care across Albany County.
