Drivers heading out of Laramie can reach the full Pole Mountain road network north of Interstate 80, but they should not assume the whole recreation area has returned to summer footing. The U.S. Forest Service reopened all National Forest System roads on the Pole Mountain unit for public motorized travel on April 23, restoring access across the 55,000-acre block between Laramie and Cheyenne while developed campgrounds remain seasonally closed.

The reopening matters because Pole Mountain is one of the closest and most accessible stretches of National Forest System land for people coming from Laramie, Cheyenne and Fort Collins. That makes the road system more than a map update. It is the route many Albany County residents use for camping, hunting, day trips and trail access, and it is a familiar corridor for the local businesses that serve those trips, from fuel stops to outfitters and other Laramie-area shops that depend on forest traffic.

Forest Service officials said the roads came back in stages over the previous week after seasonal road maintenance, cheatgrass spraying and hazard tree removal in multiple locations. The agency said it weighed public safety and natural resource sustainability in deciding when to reopen the roads, a reminder that access on Pole Mountain is managed, not automatic. Seasonal closures begin Feb. 1 under the 2017 Pole Mountain Travel Management project decision, and the end date depends on weather and road conditions.

That timing matters in spring, when snowmelt and wet ground can quickly damage roads and surrounding habitat. The Forest Service said the closure schedule is meant to protect resources during those conditions, then reopen roads as soon as practical once staff can check conditions and complete maintenance. On April 10, the agency also said aerial cheatgrass spraying was underway on Pole Mountain, with helicopter treatment targeting up to 2,300 acres.

Even with the roads open, the rules are still tight in places locals know well. Dispersed camping along Forest Road 700, also called the Vedauwoo Road, and its spur roads is allowed only in designated locations. Annual shooting restrictions across the Pole Mountain unit run from March 31 to Sept. 10. Visitors with questions can contact the Laramie Ranger District tip line at 307-745-2392.

The recreation picture is still changing by site. Vedauwoo Campground’s main loop has 28 campsites, and the surrounding Vedauwoo area covers roughly 10 square miles of weathered Sherman granite. The Forest Service says the road may be clear of snow as early as April, while the campground typically does not open with full services until the beginning of June. For Albany County, that means the spring travel season is moving forward, but Pole Mountain is still operating under seasonal limits that shape how far people can go and what they can do.
