Deadly Week on Wyoming Roads: Three Killed in Crashes, Blizzard Chaos
One person killed, six hospitalized and 13 sheltered at the Albany County Fairgrounds after a 15-to-20-vehicle pileup shut down I-80 near Laramie for 17 hours.

Three people died on Wyoming highways in a single week as a stretch of extreme weather triggered a chain-reaction pileup on Interstate 80 near Laramie, killed two others in separate crashes near Rock Springs and Lander, and produced 33 vehicle blowovers in a single day across the state.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol confirmed one fatality in the I-80 crash, which occurred on Sunday and involved as many as 15 to 20 vehicles, including several semi-trucks. Six people were transported to local hospitals for injuries. Another 13 were taken to the Albany County Fairgrounds for shelter after the crash closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 for more than 17 hours. The identity of the victim has not been released.
WHP spokesman Aaron Brown said investigators have a working theory on what triggered the pileup. "We believe it was a flash freeze," Brown said. "A couple of trucks crashed, and then more followed in a chain reaction. I'm waiting on an official number, but we're looking at 15 to 20 vehicles involved." He cautioned that the investigation remains open: "We don't know the actual cause of that incident, but you can imagine it could have been ice and people following too close, driving too fast for conditions."
Sunday's crash on I-80 was not Wyoming's only fatal collision that week. A separate death was reported near Rock Springs, also on Sunday. Earlier in the week, another person died near Lander on Thursday. No further identifying details about those victims have been released.

The wider toll from the blizzard conditions extended far beyond the multi-vehicle crash near Laramie. On one day alone, WHP troopers responded to 33 wind blowovers statewide and issued citations to 22 of those drivers. Troopers spent the stretch of severe weather helping stranded and injured motorists while issuing multiple citations across dozens of incidents.
Brown offered a pointed summary of the enforcement pattern his agency saw throughout the week: "Bad weather and bad decision-making never mix."
The total death count was initially reported as two before WHP's reporting was corrected to reflect three fatalities. Officials have not yet released a final official vehicle count for the I-80 crash or determined a probable cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.
