A GMC Yukon traveling eastbound on Sand Creek Road (County Road 34) tripped and rolled near milepost 4.14 south of Laramie in the pre-dawn hours, killing 20-year-old passenger Johanna Quintanilla and injuring four other occupants. The crash was reported at approximately 1:06 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol fatal crash summary cited by KGAB AM 650 and Oil City News.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol summary says the Yukon crested a hill, the rear end lost traction, and the driver overcorrected, which caused the vehicle to “trip and roll.” The patrol’s fatality summary describes that sequence and, as KGAB noted, “the summary does not list any possible contributing factors.”

Six people were inside the GMC Yukon when it rolled. KGAB and Oil City reported that Quintanilla, identified by both outlets as a 20-year-old passenger, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; KGAB described her as “an unbuckled passenger.” Four of the five remaining occupants sustained injuries, and one person was uninjured, the outlets reported. Names and ages of the injured were not released.

Oil City News reported scene details that the section of Sand Creek Road where the rollover occurred is a dirt road described as “covered in mud and gravel,” and that weather was clear at the time of the crash. The Wyoming Highway Patrol and the Albany County Sheriff’s Department both responded to the scene, according to Oil City and the WYHP summary on the Wyoming Department of Transportation Fatal Crash Summary map.

Authorities have not released a driver identity, toxicology results, speed estimates, or whether any citations or charges were issued; those items were not included in the WYHP summary or initial news reports. KGAB’s coverage placed the crash in a broader statewide tally, reporting that there have been 12 reported fatal crashes in Wyoming this year, resulting in 15 deaths, per WYHP data cited by the station.

The WYHP fatal crash summary cited in initial reporting is preliminary and may be updated as investigators complete their review, officials cautioned through the WYDOT fatal crash map. Local officials and emergency responders have not issued further public statements about hospital destinations or the conditions of the injured.
