University of Wyoming Hosts Decompress Fest to Aid Finals Stress
The University of Wyoming is running Decompress Fest through Dec. 8, offering free wellness and de stress activities for students during finals. The program pools campus units including UW Libraries, the Wellness Center, LeaRN, the Writing Center, ASUW, UWIN and Residence Life, providing services that aim to reduce pressure on students and boost campus engagement.

The University of Wyoming opened Decompress Fest on Dec. 1 and will continue programming through Dec. 8, delivering a weeklong slate of free wellness offerings timed to the peak of finals. The initiative is coordinated across multiple campus units, with UW Libraries, the Wellness Center, LeaRN, the Writing Center, ASUW, UWIN and Residence Life providing activities designed to lower stress and increase access to nonclinical supports.
Events include low barrier activities such as coloring contests, brain break games and craft tables, alongside timed services that require reservations. Massage chairs and RelaxSpace pods are available by appointment, and a Zen Den relaxation lounge and guided fitness classes offer on site opportunities for decompression. The schedule also features puppy playdates, mocktail and craft sessions, late night cookies and other informal gatherings intended to ease the intensity of exam week.
The university published a full daily schedule that lists focused offerings such as foot massage pods and craft kits, a time management workshop, a smoothie bike, music bingo and additional puppy playdates. The program also includes targeted giveaways, including VIP study room upgrades for students who reserve certain spaces, intended to encourage utilization of campus facilities and coordinated study environments.
For Albany County the event has immediate relevance. As Laramie hosts a large student population, campus wellness programming affects local transit patterns, downtown foot traffic during peak study hours and demand for near campus services. On a policy level, Decompress Fest reflects institutional choices about how the university allocates staff time and facilities to preventive mental health supports rather than clinical interventions alone. The involvement of student government ASUW and campus learning units underscores student driven priorities and civic engagement in shaping campus responses to academic stress.
As finals conclude, observers and policymakers will be able to assess participation rates and whether such short term interventions produce measurable improvements in student wellbeing and academic outcomes. For now, Decompress Fest represents a coordinated campus effort to reduce acute stress and bolster community supports during one of the most demanding weeks of the academic year.
