Freeze Warning Targets Allendale County, Threatening Crops and Outdoor Plumbing
Sub-freezing temps as low as 31°F are headed for Allendale County tonight, threatening crops and outdoor plumbing through Tuesday morning.

A freeze watch issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston puts Allendale County on notice for sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 degrees tonight, with conditions expected to persist from late Monday night through Tuesday morning and the watch remaining in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The NWS Charleston office extended the alert to Hampton County in South Carolina as well as six Georgia counties: Bulloch, Candler, Evans, Jenkins, Screven, and Tattnall. An updated watch was released Sunday at 7:31 p.m., narrowing the most dangerous window to between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The threat is not merely uncomfortable temperatures. "Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing," the National Weather Service states. That warning carries real weight in Allendale County, where agriculture anchors the local economy and many older homes and outbuildings have exposed exterior pipes. The NWS is direct about what residents should do: "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold."
For anyone with potted plants or container gardens, the guidance is urgent. According to the NWS, moving sensitive plants indoors is the most effective option because, depending on the severity of conditions, a freeze will likely kill them. The agency acknowledges there is little else that can be done once temperatures drop into the 29-to-32-degree range that defines a freeze warning threshold.
The contrast with today's daytime conditions is stark. As of Sunday, Allendale was sitting at overcast and 68 degrees, a reading that can make tonight's forecast feel abstract. It is not. The NWS issued this watch on March 15 and updated it again Sunday evening precisely because confidence in the overnight low was increasing.
Residents should consult the NWS Charleston SC official alert page and local emergency management channels for any watch-to-warning upgrades before Tuesday morning.
