USC Salkehatchie marks 60 years of local higher education growth

Residents from Allendale, Bamberg and Hampton counties organized in late 1964 to bring a college closer to home, and that local campaign became USC Salkehatchie when the South Carolina General Assembly created the Western Carolina Higher Education Commission. The campus opened in 1965 with eight part-time faculty members and 76 students, answering a regional need that county leaders and families had already identified for themselves.

USC Salkehatchie’s official history says the school grew out of “local civic commitment and momentum,” and the numbers trace that growth. What began as a small regional center of the University of South Carolina has grown to more than 1,100 students and 20 full-time instructors, and the campus later added a second location. In Allendale County, the west campus remains a visible part of the county seat and a reminder that the school was built to serve this part of the state, not to sit apart from it.

That original purpose still shapes how the college functions today. The university says students can “begin your bachelor's degree, earn an associate degree, or finish your bachelor's online through Palmetto College.” USC Salkehatchie offers associate degrees in art or science, and students can complete the first two years of almost every major offered by the University of South Carolina without leaving campus. The school also offers dual enrollment for high school students, extending its reach into the local school pipeline and giving students a place to start before moving on to a four-year degree.

Commencement figures show how that pipeline reaches beyond one county. At the Allendale campus on April 26, 2024, USC Salkehatchie awarded 135 degrees, including 116 associate degrees and 19 bachelor’s degrees. Those graduates came from 4 states and 52 cities, and 21 were high school students. The previous year’s 51st commencement in Allendale awarded 115 degrees, including 92 associate degrees and 23 bachelor’s degrees.

The campus also remains tied to regional leadership development through Leadership Salkehatchie, a program sponsored by SouthernCarolina Alliance. The Class of 2026 launched Jan. 22, 2026, at the Atrium on the Allendale campus and produced 13 new regional leaders from Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties. With alumni working in business, healthcare, education, government and nonprofits, the program adds another layer to USC Salkehatchie’s role in the local economy, where access to education and leadership training still starts close to home.
