Window Rock's Navajo Nation Zoo and Botanical Park will host the "Egg-streme Easter Celebration" on Saturday, April 12, drawing families to the only Native American owned-and-operated zoo in the United States for an event organized by the Office of Miss Navajo Nation.

The morning begins at 7 a.m. with a community fun run and walk before opening into games and egg hunts. Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren and First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren will welcome families, with Dr. Nygren centering the event on themes of family togetherness and community health.

Founded in 1962 and set against the red rock landscape of Window Rock, the tribal capital of the Navajo Nation in Apache County, the zoo is home to more than 100 animals representing just over 50 species. Every animal on permanent display is native to the Southwest and carries cultural significance to the Navajo people, living in natural habitats shaped by native vegetation. The zoo carries the official designation "A Sanctuary for Nature and the Spirit."

The Office of Miss Navajo Nation, which describes its mission as a journey of leadership, culture, and service that extends well beyond the pageant itself, organized the celebration as part of its community outreach work. Connecting the pageant program to a family event at the tribal zoo reflects the office's broader effort to bring cultural programming directly to Navajo communities.

The celebration adds to a growing calendar of family events the president's office has organized in Window Rock, which has previously included a Halloween Trunk or Treat and Haunted House. The Egg-streme Easter Celebration also marks another chapter in the Navajo Nation Zoo's six-decade history as the only zoo in the country built and run entirely by a Native American nation.
