Atchison County cleanup set for April 24-25, two drop-off sites open
County residents will have two days to haul off bulky trash, brush and hazardous waste, with a broader transfer-station drop-off on Neosho Road.

Atchison County residents will have a short window to clear out clutter, bulky trash and other unwanted items when the county’s 2026 clean up is held Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25.
County Commissioner James Campbell said during KAIR’s First Friday update that the county is again offering two drop-off locations so residents from different parts of Atchison County do not have to travel far to participate. The main site will be the Atchison County Transfer Station at 8575 Neosho Road, which will be open both Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A second site in Effingham, at 9308 U.S. Highway 159, will take drop-offs only on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The county is encouraging residents to use the event to tidy properties and get rid of items that might otherwise end up stored, burned or illegally dumped. That makes the cleanup more than a convenience. It gives households a legal, organized way to dispose of materials that can be hard to handle in ordinary trash service, while reducing the chance they end up in ditches, burn piles or back roads.
The Atchison site will accept the widest range of material. Residents can bring trash, metal, recyclables, brush and yard waste, construction debris, glass, furniture, household hazardous waste and tires with rims or tires larger than passenger-vehicle tires. The Effingham location will be more limited, accepting trash, metal, recyclables, household hazardous waste and passenger-size tires without rims, but no bulky items. That difference matters for anyone planning a trip, because a load accepted in Atchison may not be allowed in Effingham.

Campbell’s message put the event in clear community terms: clean up the county and dispose of trash and unwanted items during the scheduled dates. For county workers and solid-waste operations, the two-day event also creates a defined period to handle unusual materials in a controlled way, which can make the process safer and more efficient for both residents and staff.
