Nebraska woman injured in I-29 crash in Atchison County

A Gretna, Nebraska woman was hurt Monday in a two-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 29 in Atchison County, a border-corridor stretch where traffic regularly crosses between Kansas, Missouri and Iowa.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the collision happened at 11:50 a.m. May 25 at the 124-mile marker, about four miles south of Hamburg, Iowa. A 26-year-old woman from Gretna was driving a 2019 Nissan Atlas northbound when the vehicle changed lanes and began to slow. A 20-year-old man from Blair, Nebraska, was also northbound in a 2015 Audi AS6.

According to the patrol, the Audi struck the rear driver’s side of the Nissan, pushing the Nissan into the median. The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken by Hamburg EMS to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. The Audi was destroyed in the crash, while the Nissan sustained moderate damage.

Both vehicles were towed by Double M Towing. The patrol said the Nissan driver was not wearing a seat belt, while the Audi driver was wearing one.

The crash adds another injury wreck to the interstate corridor through Atchison County, a northeastern Kansas county on the Missouri border with Atchison as its county seat. The county was established in 1855, and today its interstate traffic is shaped by the same cross-border travel patterns that funnel drivers past Hamburg, Iowa, and toward the Missouri state line.
