Marbury Water System board blocks petition to oust members

Marbury Water System blocked a petition to remove its board members, keeping the five-person leadership in place as Autauga County customers continued to press for changes over service problems, billing questions and transparency.

The fight grew out of weeks of water trouble in Marbury, Pine Level and surrounding areas. Water restrictions began May 30 while tank maintenance was underway, and a conservation notice said work on a larger storage tank could last through the beginning of October 2026. By June 3, leaders and residents had already met to discuss Marbury water supply concerns, and by June 5 some customers were seeking board resignations after the supply crunch.

The blocked petition was the latest step in that push. WSFA’s July 17 headline described the effort as blocked, and its June 5 coverage said Pine Level residents had created a petition to remove the five board members of the Marbury Water System. A later report said the board denied the petition, stopping the removal effort before supporters could use it to force a leadership change.

Who can actually remove the board matters now. ProPublica identifies Marbury Water System as a 501(c)(12) nonprofit in Marbury, and Alabama Code section 10A-3A-8.08 says a director of a membership nonprofit corporation may be removed by the members who are eligible to vote. In practice, that means a board cannot simply be pushed out by a blocked petition alone; the members’ removal process, if allowed by the governing documents, is the route that carries legal weight.

For customers who still want changes, the utility’s own channels are the next place to press. Marbury Water System lists a main phone number, (205) 755-7949, and its website directs customers to rates, FAQ, documents, contact and bill-payment pages. Those records and contact points are the most direct tools available while the dispute over Marbury’s water service remains unresolved.
