Prattville closes section of Gaddis Avenue for manhole repairs
Prattville closed Gaddis Avenue between Cooper Avenue and Spencer Street for manhole repairs, affecting local traffic along a corridor tied to the city’s aging sewer network.

Prattville closed a section of Gaddis Avenue between Cooper Avenue and Spencer Street for manhole repairs, forcing drivers in that stretch to find alternate routes while the Wastewater Division handled the work.
The closure hit a part of the city where even a single repair can ripple beyond one block. Prattville Public Works says it maintains about 5,000 manholes and 200 miles of sewer mains, a network large enough to make localized fixes matter for nearby traffic, access and the day-to-day operation of the system.
The Wastewater Division says its job is to protect human health and the environment through efficient, cost-effective collection and treatment while staying in compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Alabama Department of Environmental Management rules. City officials say that work also supports economic development in Prattville, a reminder that sewer repairs are not just maintenance issues but part of the infrastructure that keeps neighborhoods and businesses functioning.
Prattville Public Works operates five divisions and maintains the city’s streets, drainage and other physical assets, so the Gaddis Avenue closure fits into a wider workload that reaches well beyond one manhole. The city has also been investing in sewer and roadway projects elsewhere, including a $500,000 Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs Community Development Block Grant announced Feb. 13, 2026, for the College Heights area. That project includes rehabilitating about 264 linear feet of sewer manhole linings at 33 manholes and resurfacing about 1.65 miles of roadway.
The city has pointed to another sewer effort in the Creekwalk area as well, where crews planned about 850 linear feet of new PVC sanitary sewer main and seven manhole assemblies. Together, those projects suggest Prattville is working through more than isolated spot repairs as it balances aging systems with ongoing growth.
Residents needing wastewater help can call the Wastewater Division at 334-595-0640 at the Autauga Creek Treatment Plant or 334-595-0650 at the Pine Creek Treatment Plant. Sewer clogs, overflows and other emergencies should be reported to Public Works at 334-595-0888.
