When Band Director Chris King broke the news to his students just after homecoming in 2024, the Pride of Prattville Marching Band had already earned something no other program in Alabama had: an invitation to perform in Philadelphia's 250th Salute to Independence Parade on July 3, representing the entire state of Alabama as the sole band from this state at the national celebration.

King, who has led the Prattville High School program for more than a decade, did not undersell the moment. "To represent your whole state on this national level... it's the biggest honor," he said.

The parade marks the country's 250th birthday, and the Pride of Prattville will march directly in front of Independence Hall, one of the most historically charged backdrops in American public life. After the parade, the band plans to extend the trip with a visit to Washington, D.C.

For junior Emma Ko, the selection carries a meaning that goes beyond the trip itself. Band programs at high schools often labor in the shadow of athletics, logging early mornings and long rehearsal blocks without the same scoreboard visibility. "Band usually doesn't get a lot of recognition," Ko said, "but us getting chosen this far shows that band is a commitment."

Senior Knox Murphree echoed that sentiment, describing the Philadelphia performance as a chance to honor the work the group has accumulated over years of competition seasons, including the band's own Heart of Dixie Marching Band Competition held each fall in Prattville.

The program is currently fundraising to cover the costs of the July trip for its students, and the Prattville Band Boosters remain active in supporting those efforts. Families and community members looking to contribute can reach the program at prideofprattville@yahoo.com or by calling (334) 365-8804.

King framed the stakes plainly: "We can't wait to showcase the talent and spirit of Alabama in such an iconic celebration." With July 3 approaching, the Pride of Prattville is preparing to make that case in front of the whole country.
