Barley Brown's Wins Eastern Oregon Brewery Title for Fourth Straight Year

Competing against 972 entries from 104 Oregon breweries, Barley Brown's Beer claimed the Regional Brewing Company of the Year title for Eastern Oregon at the 11th annual Oregon Beer Awards on April 2, making it four consecutive years the Baker City brewery has held the honor. The ceremony at Revolution Hall in Portland named Portland's Wayfinder Beer as the evening's overall Brewery of the Year, but for Baker City, the more relevant figure is a streak that now reaches back to the 8th annual awards in 2023.

The economic stakes behind that streak are considerable. Willamette Week has called Barley Brown's Baker City's biggest tourism draw, and founder Tyler Brown has deliberately refused to open satellite locations or taprooms anywhere outside Baker City. That decision forces anyone who wants these beers fresh from the source to make the trip to 2190 Main St, turning every award cycle into a direct driver of destination visits.

The brewpub sits in a building constructed in 1940 as Gwilliam's Bakery, renovated by the Brown family in 1997 and open since 1998, making it 28 years old at the time of this year's recognition. Its origin is one of Baker City's more improbable civic stories: the Brown family was en route to Seattle when their VW van broke down here; they stayed, ran a bakery and then a restaurant in the space, and eventually built the brewpub that would become one of the most decorated small operations in the country.

By its 25th anniversary in 2023, Barley Brown's had accumulated 26 Great American Beer Festival awards, including nine gold medals and a 2013 GABF title as best small brewery in the nation. Flagship Pallet Jack IPA, a GABF gold medalist, is distributed statewide and widely regarded as an Oregon standard. Turmoil CDA is considered category-defining in its style, and Shredder's Wheat rounds out a nationally recognized lineup. Chef Bram Novak leads the kitchen, and the pub keeps 10 taps of small-batch beers flowing at any given time.

The 2026 Oregon Beer Awards noted a resurgence of West Coast IPAs among this year's competitive entries, a style central to Barley Brown's reputation since its earliest years. Travel Oregon describes the brewery as "one of Oregon's most award-winning breweries," a designation that, combined with the no-expansion policy, channels recognition directly back into Baker City's local economy.

Prior to the April 2 ceremony, the Oregon Beer Awards staged a "Best in Beer" week during which winning beers were poured at top Portland venues for $5, giving Barley Brown's significant exposure in the state's largest market. For a brewery that has won the same regional title four years running while steadfastly keeping its only tap handles on Main Street, that Portland exposure has one destination.
