Salvation Army to close Baker City thrift store, keep services open
Baker City's Salvation Army thrift store will close May 1, ending a low-cost source for clothes and furniture. Food boxes and social services will stay at 2505 Broadway.

Baker City households that have counted on the Salvation Army thrift store for low-cost clothing, furniture and emergency basics will lose that retail option when the store closes May 1 at 2505 Broadway Street. The nonprofit will keep its food bank and social-service operation open at the same address, so the change is a shift away from resale and toward direct aid rather than a full departure from Baker City.
The Baker City service unit will continue to offer food boxes, youth summer camps, disaster services and volunteer opportunities, and the food program remains a practical backstop for people who need groceries more than merchandise. The Salvation Army’s Oregon page says Baker City food boxes are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 2505 Broadway, while the Oregon Food Bank food finder currently lists the site as open Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., with Monday service closed because of staffing issues. That food finder says the pantry offers fresh produce, protein options and dry goods, though availability can change week to week.
The loss will hit a small market hard. Baker County had 16,668 residents in the 2020 census, and Baker City had 10,099, which helps explain why even one discount retailer can matter to families, seniors and anyone trying to stretch a paycheck. Anne Clark of Baker City said the thrift store mattered because some county residents cannot afford regular retail prices for clothing and other necessities. For shoppers who still need secondhand goods, a local alternative remains: Marla’s Mall at Baker High School. Baker School District 5J says the student-run thrift store is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with hours subject to school schedules, and it offers items free to students and their families, as well as to community members.

The Salvation Army’s Baker City location listing still identifies both the Family Thrift Store and the Service Extension Social Service Center at 2505 Broadway, and the service unit can be reached at 541-523-5853. The organization said it has been active in Baker City since 1897, underscoring how long it has been woven into the community even as its local model now leans more heavily on food and social services than on retail sales.
