Baltimore City Board Approves 2026-27 School Calendar Prioritizing Learning, Wellness
Baltimore City Board approved the 2026-27 school calendar, prioritizing learning, wellness and educator development, key dates set for families and staff.

The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners has approved the 2026-27 school calendar, saying it was "designed to maximize student learning while balancing the needs of educators and families." City Schools identified priorities that include "prioritizes student learning and academic achievement," "incorporates professional development opportunities to support educators," "includes wellness days to promote well-being for students and staff," and "provides time for families to honor cultural celebrations."
The calendar sets the first day for staff as Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and the first day for students as Monday, August 24, 2026 (the student start date appears twice in the district posting). Winter Break is listed as December 23, 2026 – January 4, 2027, and Spring Break as March 28 – April 6, 2027. The district posting also lists the "last day of school, barring inclement weather" as Friday, June 11, 2026 (early release); that end date is inconsistent with a 2026-27 schedule and should be confirmed with City Schools.
For Baltimore City families, these dates shape summer childcare decisions, after-school care budgets and employer scheduling. Earlier staff start and later student start dates mean teacher professional development and classroom preparation time before students return, which can reduce in-classroom instructional disruption but also shifts costs to families who may need additional childcare during that lead-in week. District-stated wellness days and cultural-observance time aim to reduce burnout for educators and students; in economic terms, those policies can affect substitute teacher hiring patterns and hourly staffing demand in the city’s child-care and youth services markets.
Neighboring Baltimore County Public Schools adopted a different timeline for 2026-27. BCPS approved a Pre-Labor Day Start calendar on November 4, 2025, that lists August 21 for an administrative meeting, August 24-28 as professional duty days for teachers, and August 31 as the opening day for students. BCPS embeds multiple early-release days tied to marking periods and grade reporting, and explicit observance-linked professional days such as "September 21 Systemwide Professional Development Day – Schools Closed for Students – Teachers on Duty – Yom Kippur" and "May 17 Systemwide Professional Development Day – Schools Closed for Students – Teachers on Duty – Eid al-Adha." The county calendar also uses a clear color/symbol key to indicate closures and inclement-weather make-up days.
The City posting contains limited operational detail beyond the headline dates and priorities; it does not list marking-period end dates, the schedule of professional development days, or a full inclement-weather make-up plan. The "last day" discrepancy in the City Schools notice suggests a typographical error; City Schools communications or the Board clerk should be contacted to confirm whether the intended last day is June 11, 2027, and to release the full calendar PDF with all early-release and professional development dates.
Families, employers and local youth-service providers should review the confirmed calendar once City Schools posts the full schedule. Between winter and spring breaks and the August start pattern, the approved calendar will guide household planning, seasonal hiring and school staffing budgets for the 2026-27 academic year.
