Heritage Smokehouse will close for good in August, removing one of North Baltimore’s more familiar sit-down stops from the York Road corridor and deepening the churn along a strip where residents already watch closely for vacancies and turnover.

The barbecue restaurant at 5800 York Road announced the shutdown on social media. George Marsh and Jenny Marsh, the husband-and-wife owners who opened Heritage Smokehouse in August 2021, have spent the past four years building the business around brisket, pulled pork, ribs, artisanal sausages, homemade cakes and pies, specialty cocktails and a rum bar.

The closure lands after a stretch of public financial strain. In 2024, George Marsh said the restaurant had fallen so far behind on bills that he worried about finding a meat supplier willing to keep serving him. That earlier warning makes the August shutdown look less like an isolated decision than the end of a long squeeze on a small independent restaurant trying to survive on York Road.

Heritage’s own website describes the business as an award-winning barbecue spot in Govans with lunch and dinner service Tuesday through Saturday, along with homemade desserts, hand-crafted cocktails and custom smokers. On the ground, that made the restaurant more than a destination for barbecue fans. It was part of the everyday dining mix for people who live, work and travel through North Baltimore.

The property itself has also been in motion. Alex Cooper Auctioneers listed 5800 York Road as a postponed auction item, describing it as a 3,385-square-foot restaurant building with a bar, commercial kitchen, walk-in refrigeration, rear parking and an outdoor cooking area with built-in ovens. The listing said the site carried a 7-day BD7 liquor license, a scheduled annual rent of $65,556 under a lease that began Sept. 1, 2021, and that the tenant was in arrears and not current on rent.

For nearby businesses, the loss is bigger than one storefront. Every closure on York Road changes the feel of the corridor, where independent restaurants help anchor foot traffic and signal whether the neighborhood is holding steady or slipping. Heritage Smokehouse had been a regular presence on local best-of lists and a recognizable stop in Govans. Its departure will leave another gap in a commercial strip where stability is measured one lease, one kitchen and one dining room at a time.
