Baltimore police say a 37 year old man was shot and is in stable condition at a hospital after officers opened fire when his vehicle charged at them on the night of December 16. The episode began near 21st and Charles streets around 8 15 p.m., when officers responding to a narcotics complaint attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver fled, Deputy Commissioner Kevin Jones said.

Officers pursued the vehicle through the city, and the chase ended in a dead end alley in the 1200 block of Division Street. Police said the vehicle reversed and then charged at officers. Multiple officers fired into the vehicle and struck the driver. Officers rendered aid to the person who was shot, Jones said. A passenger in the vehicle was not shot and is in police custody.

Mayor Brandon Scott addressed the shooting at a news conference Tuesday night. "This unfortunate event is the result of someone trying to run over police officers after police officers were doing their job," he said. "We know that this is under investigation. We will abide by all rules and regulations that we have, and that includes operating, as we always do, with our critical incident reporting guidelines."

The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police posted on X that it was aware of the shooting and that it did not appear any officers were injured. City officials said the incident will follow established critical incident reporting procedures, and investigators are reviewing body camera footage and other evidence.

For residents in the immediate area the shooting disrupted evening activity and heightened concern about street safety and police pursuits. Neighbors reported increased police presence in the hours after the incident, and businesses along Division Street experienced temporary closures while investigators worked. The event is likely to fuel ongoing local discussions about public safety, law enforcement tactics and transparency.

Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional details will be released as they become available. This report will be updated with official findings and any related administrative or legal actions.
