Baltimore Police Department on Monday identified the victim of a March 6 shooting in North Baltimore as 16-year-old Jaythan Day, saying officers found him unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound inside a home on the 1400 block of West Old Cold Spring Lane in the Medfield neighborhood. Police units arrived at the scene at 6:25 p.m., according to a department news release, and the teen was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he later died.

The department labeled the event “a targeted incident that occurred inside a home,” a phrase provided by BPD spokesperson James D. Moses in an email to investigators and the press. Homicide detectives have assumed control of the case, and district detectives are assisting in the canvass and evidence-gathering, police said.

Investigators emphasized that no arrests have been announced and that the department does not believe there is an ongoing danger to the public, a point Moses also communicated in his email. Homicide detectives asked anyone with information to come forward: “Homicide detectives have assumed control of the investigation and are asking anyone with information about this incident to call detectives at 410-396-2455 or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.”

Neighbors on West Old Cold Spring Lane expressed shock and unease after the shooting. One nearby resident who asked to remain anonymous said, “That's shocking, because this is not that kind of neighborhood.” The same resident added, “There's always a problem with kids running in and out, slamming doors, late at night. Kids not at home. It just seems odd.” Another unnamed man in the neighborhood said, “There's just too much crime in the city, and it has to stop.”

Local reporting indicates this is the 23rd homicide in Baltimore so far this year, a count noted by local outlets as slightly above the number at the same point in 2025. Early coverage of the March 6 incident noted some variance in response-time descriptions, with the department news release and multiple units citing the 6:25 p.m. arrival time while one local television account described officers arriving shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Baltimore police said they released the victim’s name on Monday and continue to ask anyone who saw activity in the area of the 1400 block of West Old Cold Spring Lane on the evening of March 6, or who has video or other information, to contact homicide detectives at 410-396-2455 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Homicide detectives remain on the scene work and are following investigative leads.
