Transit worker killed in Baltimore shooting, union calls for safety

The Amalgamated Transit Union identified Isaac Caldwell, a Local 1764 Maryland Transit Administration Mobility bus driver, as the transit worker killed in a Baltimore shooting. The union said Caldwell was waiting for a bus to take him to work when he was shot, and it called his death the third murder of a transit worker in Baltimore in the past year.

Caldwell's job put him inside the city's transit network, part of the daily system that keeps Baltimore residents moving to work, school, medical appointments and other essential trips. His killing landed as a blow to the people who run that system, from drivers and mobility workers to the crews who have to show up before sunrise and head home after dark.

The union said better protection for transit workers is needed after the killing.
