Federal Hill residents Michael and Christina were jolted from sleep by gunfire just before 3 a.m. Easter Sunday. Their 911 calls brought police to the 200 block of Key Highway, where officers found an unidentified adult man dead from an apparent gunshot wound near Rash Field Park.

Security camera footage operated by MATCOM, a private security company serving Federal Hill, showed a crowd gathering in the parking lot of a small plaza at the intersection of Battery Avenue and Key Highway before shots were fired and people scattered, some fleeing toward the Inner Harbor, others speeding off in vehicles. The victim was seen running before he collapsed on the sidewalk. MATCOM had installed the camera at that intersection roughly a week before the shooting; Baltimore police are now using the footage to search for a suspect.

City Councilman Zac Blanchard, whose District 11 includes Federal Hill, called for a coordinated city response. "This stretch of Key Highway has been a severe late-night public safety problem for years now," Blanchard said. "We need a comprehensive plan to discourage bad late-night behavior there. I hope to see City agencies, businesses, and the residential community working together to prevent further tragedies there." Blanchard later noted that there have been three late-night shootings within one block of the Key Highway market this year alone, and three homicides within one to one-and-a-half blocks of the market since 2023.

The killing was not the night's only gun violence. Just after 9 p.m., a 21-year-old man walked into a local hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound. Officers investigated and determined the shooting had occurred at the 1800 block of Saint Paul Street, just over a block from Baltimore Penn Station and near the restaurants and bars in the Station North neighborhood. His condition remained unclear as of Sunday afternoon.

Homicide detectives have asked anyone with information to contact them at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup. Both investigations remain open.
