Denmark Library Unveils Spring Reading, Poetry Programs for Local Families
Denmark's free "Blind Date with a Book" program wraps titles so readers choose blind, alongside National Poetry Month events at 5122 Carolina Highway.

The ABBE Regional Library System's Denmark branch, at 5122 Carolina Highway, has launched two spring programs for Bamberg County families: a "Blind Date with a Book" initiative and a slate of National Poetry Month activities, both available at no cost.
The book-dating format works by wrapping titles and taping a single evocative description to each one. Patrons at the Denmark location select a book based on that teaser alone, without seeing the cover, title, or author. The concept is designed to push readers toward genres and writers they might otherwise pass over, while helping circulate titles that rarely make it off the shelf. The spring timing lines up with school schedules, giving families a low-cost way to fill mornings or afternoons during seasonal breaks.
April's National Poetry Month adds a second programming thread. The Denmark branch is hosting poetry readings, youth writing prompts, and display cases featuring local poets and their work. The activities are family-friendly and scaled to the branch's available space and staffing, making them accessible to a range of ages.
For a branch serving the city of Denmark's 3,084 residents, the stakes around that kind of programming are real. The Denmark location is part of the broader ABBE system, which circulates more than 604,000 items annually across its regional branches. Beyond books, the branch also connects patrons with job listings, county service information, and broadband access support. Events like these can draw in families who then find those resources waiting.
Neither program carries a fee. Branch manager Imagen Kinard can be reached at (803) 793-4511 for specific event times, registration details, and any scheduling changes. The branch runs Monday through Thursday beginning at 10 a.m., and the ABBE public calendar carries the most current updates, including any adjustments for staffing or weather.
