Dinks & Donuts pickleball brings Saturday morning fun to Bamberg County

Dinks & Donuts gave Bamberg County residents an early Saturday option for exercise and conversation, with Southern Pickleball Academy bringing the pickup-style gathering to Harrison Caver Park in Clearwater at 8 a.m. on May 9. The series is listed for the second Saturday of each month, and the tone was built into the name itself: a casual morning of pickleball, fellowship and free donuts.

The event was pitched for players of all levels. The listing said no tournament background or special experience was needed, making it a straightforward entry point for beginners as well as regular players who already know the game’s rhythm. No entry fee was posted, and the free donuts added to a setting that was meant to feel neighborly rather than competitive.

That matters in a county the size of Bamberg. The U.S. Census Bureau’s latest estimate puts the population at 12,796, down from 13,311 in the 2020 census, and nearly a quarter of residents, 24.4 percent, are 65 or older. Another 17.9 percent are under 18. In a place that small and spread out, recurring recreation events do more than fill a morning. They give adults a reason to show up, move around and keep up social ties without needing to drive to a larger city.

Harrison-Caver Park is one of the few local settings built for that kind of repeat use. Aiken County says the park sits off Highway 421 in Clearwater and includes lighted tennis courts, a lighted walking track, a basketball court, a large playground, picnic areas, a concession stand, outdoor restrooms and a community center with rentable space. Other park listings also identify pickleball courts there, which helps explain why it works as a home for a regular meetup.

The broader popularity of pickleball gives the local event more context. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association says 24.3 million Americans played the sport in 2025, while USA Pickleball said its membership reached 104,828 that same year. Southern Pickleball Academy, launched in 2023 as a public charity, says it uses the sport to improve lives and teach integrity, teamwork, resilience, patience and sportsmanship. In Bamberg County, that makes Dinks & Donuts less of a novelty than a practical, repeatable way for adults to stay active in one of the county’s few organized outdoor recreation settings.
