Ehrhardt man, Army veteran Theodore Michael Thomas Sr. dies at 75
The Ehrhardt native, a retired Army veteran and construction site manager, died at home April 10, leaving ties to both Ehrhardt and Denmark.

Theodore Michael Thomas Sr., 75, died at his Ehrhardt residence on Friday, April 10, leaving behind a life shaped by two of Bamberg County’s closely linked towns: Denmark, where he was born, and Ehrhardt, where he spent his final days.
Thomas was born May 6, 1950, in Denmark, the son of the late Theodore Nathan Thomas and Margie Ruth Hughes Thomas. His obituary notes that he served in the United States Army before building a civilian career as a retired construction site manager, a path that reflects both military duty and steady work in the county’s labor force.
In a town like Ehrhardt, where the 2020 census counted 457 residents, a name can carry across generations. Thomas’s life connected family, service and work in a part of Bamberg County where many households have long been tied to the same roads, churches, farms and local employers. His death closes another chapter in that small-town network of kin and neighbors that gives places like Ehrhardt their identity.
He also enjoyed hunting, a pastime that remains part of rural life for many families in this corner of South Carolina. For Thomas, that detail sits alongside his Army service and construction background to sketch the sort of life that often anchors a community quietly, through work, routine and shared traditions rather than public office or headline-grabbing roles.
Ehrhardt itself carries a deep local history. The town was named for Conrad Ehrhardt, a German immigrant and sawmill operator, and Bamberg County was established in 1897 from part of old Barnwell District. Those names and dates matter because they show how long families in this area have been rooted to the same stretch of county land. Thomas’s story fits that pattern: born in Denmark, living in Ehrhardt, and remembered through the basic milestones that mark a life fully embedded in Bamberg County.
