Bemidji bait shop thrives as Minnesota fishing opener nears
One of Bemidji’s last bait shops is seeing a surge as the opener nears, a reminder that 500,000 anglers can move downtown sales in a weekend.

As the Minnesota fishing opener approached, Northwoods Bait & Tackle offered a clear look at how quickly Bemidji’s seasonal economy turns. At one of the city’s last bait shops, the days before Saturday’s opener were not just about minnows and hooks. They were about the first real burst of spring spending, when anglers buy bait, line and tackle, and nearby gas stations, restaurants and lodging properties feel the same lift.
Brad Parsons, who runs Northwoods Bait & Tackle, said the business was doing well as customers geared up for the season. That matters in Bemidji because fishing is not a side note here. It is part of the local retail rhythm, especially for businesses tied to lakes, weekend travel and outdoor recreation. When the opener hits, the money rarely stays in one place. It moves from bait counters to fuel pumps to coffee stops and motel rooms across Beltrami County.

The state’s numbers show why the weekend carries so much weight. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources set the 2026 fishing opener for Saturday, May 9, and scheduled the Governor’s Fishing Opener in Stillwater on the St. Croix River. Minnesota typically has about 1.4 million licensed anglers, and about 500,000 of them fish on opening day. That is a massive concentration of demand for one weekend, especially in a region where outdoor spending helps support small businesses.
Bemidji sits in the middle of that system. DNR fisheries staff in the Bemidji area oversee 113 fishing lakes and 220 miles of rivers and streams across Beltrami, Clearwater, northern Cass and northern Hubbard counties. Some of the best-known waters in the region include Lake Bemidji, Upper Red Lake, Cass Lake and the lakes in Itasca State Park. Those waters bring anglers back every spring, and they keep bait shops and resort businesses busy as soon as the ice is out and the opener nears.

Lakeland PBS reported that opener weekend is one of the busiest weekends for bait shops and outdoor tourism businesses in north-central Minnesota. In Bemidji, that kind of demand can be measured in more than just foot traffic. It shows up in inventory pressure, longer lines and a short seasonal window when local businesses have to be ready for a burst of customers all at once. For Northwoods Bait & Tackle and other businesses built around the region’s lakes, the opener is not symbolic. It is the start of a sales cycle that helps carry Bemidji into the summer.
