Blackduck caregiver Norma Jeanne Schwersinske dies at 89

Norma Jeanne Schwersinske spent much of her adult life helping Blackduck neighbors through the ordinary work of caregiving, first at the Blackduck Good Samaritan Nursing Home and later in home care after she retired. She died July 6 at age 89, and the notice left behind a clear picture of the role she played in Beltrami County: a steady presence in family homes and senior care.

Born Dec. 2, 1936, in Pine River to Frank and Mable Leonard, Norma graduated from West High School in Minneapolis in 1954. She married Eugene Schwersinske on Oct. 22, 1955, in Minneapolis, and the couple moved to Blackduck in 1972, settling into the northern Beltrami County community that would become home for the rest of her life.

Her obituary identifies her as a caregiver at the Blackduck Good Samaritan Nursing Home, the kind of work that often shapes a town without drawing attention to itself. Good Samaritan Society - Blackduck is a 30-bed skilled nursing facility that first received approval for Medicare and Medicaid services on April 1, 1992. In that setting, Norma’s job would have touched residents and families who depended on daily care, patience and familiarity.

After retiring, she continued doing home care for many years, extending that same service beyond the nursing home walls. For neighbors in Blackduck and the Bemidji area, that is the local role most likely to be remembered: not a public office or headline-making achievement, but the long, private labor of helping older adults remain cared for in their own homes.

Norma and Eugene raised four children: Mike Schwersinske, Bret Schwersinske, Pam Schwersinske and John Schwersinske. Her family also includes eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Kenneth Leonard and additional in-laws.

A celebration of life will be planned later. The obituary was published July 8, and Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji is hosting the online notice.
