On Dec. 29, 2025, KOAT reported a separate deadly I-40 closure at the Big I, where a pedestrian was struck near University Boulevard and westbound lanes were closed for hours before reopening around 1:30 a.m. That earlier case underscored how quickly a single incident on this stretch can snarl traffic near one of the city’s most heavily traveled interchanges.

For Bernalillo County drivers, the latest reopening restored a critical route, but the unanswered questions remain. The investigation continues, and the repeated deadly crashes on this part of I-40 have left residents watching for whether the corridor needs more than a quick cleanup and a return to traffic.
