Man dies in shooting near Expo New Mexico in Albuquerque

A man died Monday night after a shooting that drew a large police response near Expo New Mexico in Albuquerque. Albuquerque Police Department officers were sent to the area around 10 p.m. and found the man in the roadway on Central Avenue with serious injuries.

Police said the call came from outside a smoke shop at Central Avenue and Indiana Street, a busy stretch just west of Expo New Mexico and near the fairgrounds. Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.

APD homicide detectives are investigating. The victim’s name has not been released.

Early reports described the location differently, with one placing the shooting near Central Avenue and Louisiana Boulevard in southeast Albuquerque, still close to Expo New Mexico. Another described it as near the fairgrounds. The conflicting descriptions leave the exact block unclear, but all of the reports point to the same corridor along Central Avenue.

That corridor is one of the city’s more heavily traveled east-west routes, linking the Expo New Mexico complex, nearby businesses, and the streets that feed into southeast Albuquerque. A large police presence there on a Monday night would have been visible to drivers moving through Central, to people working in nearby storefronts, and to residents living in the blocks around the fairgrounds.

Police have not said what led to the shooting, and no additional details about the suspect or the circumstances were released. The scene remained under investigation as homicide detectives worked the area near Expo New Mexico.
