A brand-new navy blue track in Keaau gave Big Island athletes a home-stage championship, and Kamehameha-Hawaii turned it into a sweep. The resurfaced oval at the Kamehameha Schools Hawaii campus finally got its turn after fall rain delays pushed completion into spring, then produced one of the fastest BIIF meets in recent memory.

The BIIF track and field championships were held May 8 at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii campus, with Friday and Saturday track events and field events on the schedule. Kamehameha-Hawaii won the girls title with 137 points, edging Kealakehe’s 123.5 and HPA’s 63.5. On the boys side, Kamehameha-Hawaii dominated with 165 points, well ahead of Hilo’s 79 and Konawaena’s 73.

For Big Island families, the meet mattered beyond the team standings. Bringing the championship back to Keaau meant local athletes competed in front of classmates, relatives and neighbors without leaving Hawaii Island, and it gave the host school a chance to show how much a modern facility can change the feel of postseason sports. The fast surface became part of the story from the opening races to the final relays.

Kahalia Huddleston powered the Kamehameha-Hawaii girls with victories in the long jump and 400 meters, then helped seal the team title by running on the winning 4x400 relay. St. Joseph’s Michaela Costales also delivered a strong championship, winning the 110 hurdles and triple jump while taking second in the 300 hurdles. Those results helped define a girls meet that stayed close at the top until the final scoring.

Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Tanoatoa Muskat took command of the boys sprint events, winning both the 100 and 200 meters to establish himself as the Big Island’s fastest sprinter at the meet. Konawaena’s Violet Schaut produced the most eye-catching individual performance of the championship, however, setting a state record in the 100 meters at 11.88 seconds and also winning the 200 and 4x100 relay.

Schaut’s 11.88 sat atop the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s 2026 girls top-35 performance list for the 100 meters, and it added to a 2025 season in which she had already posted an 11.83 at Julian R. Yates Field. The combination of a resurfaced Keaau venue, home crowd energy and top-end local talent turned the BIIF championships into more than a meet: it became a clear snapshot of which schools and facilities are setting the pace for Big Island track right now.
