Puna Man Jumps Into Traffic on Māmalahoa Hwy, Hospitalized With Serious Injuries

A 19-year-old Puna man is hospitalized with serious injuries after crouching on the shoulder of Māmalahoa Highway and then deliberately jumping into the path of an oncoming vehicle Sunday.

Hawaiʻi County police are investigating the incident, which occurred on Māmalahoa Highway, a major artery that runs through the island's rural eastern districts. The man crouched on the road's shoulder before launching himself into traffic, according to police.

The nature and circumstances surrounding the man's actions remain under investigation. Police have not released further details about the vehicle involved or the precise location along the highway where the incident took place.

The man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. His current condition has not been publicly disclosed.
