Lighthouse Point homeowner fatally shoots dog during pet attack investigation

A Lighthouse Point homeowner shot and killed a dog Thursday morning after two dogs escaped a fenced-in yard and one attacked his smaller pet outside his home. Lighthouse Point Police said the confrontation unfolded around 10:15 a.m., turning a neighborhood animal complaint into a deadly shooting now under review.

The homeowner told police he was forced to shoot one of the dogs as it attacked his pet, and no charges had been filed. Police said the dead animal was one of two dogs involved in the incident, which began when both dogs got out of the fenced yard and started roaming the neighborhood.

The case puts a sharp focus on the split-second decisions pet owners face when an aggressive dog attack happens in front of them. It also raises the more routine but critical question of how the dogs got loose in the first place, since the attack began only after the animals left an enclosed yard and entered the neighborhood.

Broward County has seen other recent animal-related violence that has kept that issue in view. In January, a Fort Lauderdale officer shot a dog that bit him and had killed a pet rabbit. In Lighthouse Point, a separate animal-abuse case last July involved a man caught on video beating a dog with a sandal. Together, the episodes show how quickly loose-dog calls, pet attacks and animal-control problems can escalate into police investigations and criminal scrutiny.

The Lighthouse Point shooting remains under investigation, and the unanswered questions now center on containment, responsibility and whether the dogs’ owners had properly secured the yard before the attack spilled into the street.
