Six injured, including child, in Deerfield Beach crash

Six people, including a child, were injured in a four-vehicle crash Monday in Deerfield Beach, and two of the patients were listed as trauma alerts.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue said the collision happened in the 800 block of Southwest 10th Street. First responders took two of the injured to Broward Health Medical Center and four others to Broward Health North, splitting the patients between the two Broward hospitals based on the level of care they needed.

The crash turned a neighborhood street into a major emergency scene. Southwest 10th Street is not a major interstate, but the number of vehicles involved and the presence of a child among the injured underscored how serious the wreck was for the people inside the cars and for the crews who had to move quickly to get patients to treatment.

Officials had not released a cause, and no information was immediately available about whether any driver was considered at fault, whether citations were expected, or whether criminal charges were being considered. That left the focus on the immediate damage: six people hurt, two trauma alerts, and a four-vehicle collision on a local roadway in central Broward.

The Deerfield Beach crash also comes after another severe wreck in the city on Northeast Third Avenue on May 26, when a three-vehicle collision killed one woman and injured three others, including two trauma alerts. Taken together, the two crashes show that Deerfield Beach firefighters and paramedics have been responding to a run of high-severity roadway emergencies this spring, even as investigators continue sorting out what led to each one.
