Sun Sentinel endorses Adam Cervera for Broward School Board seat

The Sun Sentinel Editorial Board recommended Adam Cervera for the Broward County School Board seat in the Aug. 18 election. If Broward voters keep him in District 6, the board will retain a DeSantis appointee while it continues wrestling with enrollment declines, job cuts and a referendum that has already divided members.

The endorsement, headlined “On Broward School Board, keep Adam Cervera,” followed a July 20 questionnaire identifying Cervera as the District 6 candidate. It also came after the paper had already framed the Aug. 18 contest as a “pre-primary alert” on July 7, signaling that the race is carrying more weight than a routine local election.

Cervera is not entering the final stretch alone. The Broward PBA backed him for School Board District 6 on July 25, adding a public-safety endorsement to his support. The Miami Herald described him on July 14 as a DeSantis appointee, a label that has made his candidacy part of the broader struggle over whether Broward’s school board will keep its current conservative alignment or swing in a different direction.

That larger fight is playing out across the district. A June 17 Sun Sentinel story said five Broward School Board seats were up for grabs in 2026, with three sitting members facing opponents and two not running. The same year has already brought open conflict over an upcoming referendum, a May 11 board vote to cut hundreds of jobs amid declining enrollment, and a June 23 decision to review, but not stop, an artificial intelligence program over the summer.

For parents, that means the Aug. 18 election is about more than one seat. The next board will help decide how Broward County Public Schools handles staffing, classroom resources, technology oversight and the trust gap left by months of controversy. The Sun Sentinel’s endorsement signals that, in District 6, it sees Cervera as the candidate most likely to keep that work on course.
