Tomato starts at a big-box garden center come with no promise they've spent a day acclimating to northwest Iowa wind or soil. The ones available May 1 at the Buena Vista County Extension office have.

Buena Vista County Master Gardeners, sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will hold a plant sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 1, at 701 Seneca Street, Suite 1 in Storm Lake. The eight-hour window is long by plant-sale standards, giving buyers from Storm Lake, Alta and surrounding communities most of a workday to stop in.

The sale will carry three categories: vegetable starts, flower flats and indoor plants. Tomato and pepper variety starts are expected to see the heaviest demand, and early arrival is recommended for those. The flower selection will include marigolds, salvia, zinnias and sunflowers, all suited to northwest Iowa's shorter frost-free growing window. For indoor gardening, the selection includes succulents, aloe, jade and snake plants.

The key difference from a standard garden center run is what comes with the purchase. Every plant was started and hardened by Master Gardener volunteers with Buena Vista County's specific conditions in mind, and those same volunteers will be stationed on site May 1 to answer questions about soil preparation, frost timing, pest management and plant selection for local microclimates. That level of localized guidance does not come with a flat of marigolds from a regional supplier.

Proceeds from the sale fund the Master Gardener program's community outreach work, including school garden initiatives, demonstration gardens and educational materials for local horticulture programs. The sale is the fundraising engine behind those year-round efforts.

Shoppers should bring boxes or crates for transport. Those with questions about payment options or specific plant availability before May 1 can reach the extension office at 712-732-5056. Office hours run Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
