Elderly Motorist Killed in Single Vehicle Rollover on Highway 3
An 83 year old Storm Lake man died after his vehicle left the roadway and rolled multiple times on Highway 3 east of Humboldt on December 1. The crash temporarily closed the highway and prompted a response by multiple public safety agencies, underscoring local road safety and emergency coordination issues residents should note.

An 83 year old Storm Lake resident, identified as Paul Bengtson, died in a single vehicle crash on Highway 3 east of Humboldt shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday December 1. Iowa State Patrol investigators report that Bengtson was driving a 2020 Ford Edge when the vehicle crossed the center line. According to the investigation, the driver overcorrected, the vehicle entered the ditch and then rolled multiple times. The crash was fatal.
Highway 3 was temporarily closed between Quebec Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Humboldt Fire Department assisted the Iowa State Patrol during the response. Crews cleared the scene and reopened the roadway after investigators completed their on site work.
The fatal rollover raises immediate safety concerns for residents who use Highway 3 as a regional connector between Humboldt and surrounding communities. The sequence identified by investigators crossing the center line then overcorrecting is a common pattern in rural roadway crashes and can be exacerbated by limited shoulders, reduced visibility, and seasonal road conditions in December. While investigators have outlined the mechanics of this crash, further review will determine whether road design, sight lines, vehicle condition or other factors contributed.

For local officials the incident highlights the importance of coordinated emergency response and highway maintenance priorities. Temporary road closures due to serious crashes disrupt local traffic and commerce, and they test interagency communication and resources. County and state transportation planners may consider this crash when assessing center line treatments, shoulder maintenance and winter safety measures on Highway 3 and similar corridors.
The death of a long time Storm Lake resident is a loss for the community. Residents traveling this winter should remain alert to changing road conditions, heed posted speed limits and give extra margin for unexpected maneuvers by other drivers. Investigators with the Iowa State Patrol continue to handle the inquiry into the circumstances of the crash.
