Garage Fire in Storm Lake Prompts Emergency Response, Investigation

Storm Lake firefighters were dispatched at 12:55 p.m. Saturday to 1003 West 5th Street after a passerby reported smoke coming from the home. When crews arrived they found flames in the southwest corner of an attached single unit garage and launched a rapid suppression effort.

Engine 72 began a quick attack while Aerial 71 crews assisted with suppression and overhaul. Power to the structure was secured and thermal imaging cameras were used to locate and check for remaining hot spots. An investigator later ruled the fire an electrical accident. The Storm Lake Police Department and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulance crews assisted at the scene.

The early response prevented flames from spreading into the main living area, local emergency officials said, and investigators focused on identifying the electrical cause.
