Library Fundraiser Raises Funds, Aims to Improve Children Services
The Friends of the Storm Lake Public Library launched their annual holiday fundraiser on November 26, offering four themed gift baskets by silent bid to support library furnishings, materials, and programs for all ages. The group says proceeds will also help fund a major 2026 renovation of the children’s department, including replacement of the department computer station, an upgrade that affects digital access and early learning in Buena Vista County.

The Friends of the Storm Lake Public Library opened their annual holiday silent bid fundraiser on November 26, offering four themed gift baskets for community members to bid on in person. Bids can be placed at the Storm Lake Public Library and monetary donations are accepted by mail to Friends of the Library, 609 Cayuga St., Storm Lake. Proceeds will be used to fund furnishings, materials, and programming that serve patrons of all ages.
The fundraising drive comes as the Friends prepare for a major project in 2026, a renovation of the library children’s department that will include replacing the current computer station. Library Director Elizabeth Huff emphasized the importance of community support for maintaining and expanding local library services. The replacement of the computer station is a tangible example of how small investments can affect access to digital tools that children use for homework, reading programs, and early computer literacy.
For Buena Vista County residents the impact reaches beyond books. Public libraries function as community hubs where families access information, use technology, and participate in youth programming that supports school readiness. Upgrades to the children’s area and new computer equipment can reduce barriers for households with limited internet at home, and contribute to broader efforts around educational equity and long term social wellbeing.

The fundraiser also touches on public health dimensions. Libraries provide safe spaces for learning and social connection, services linked with better mental health and community resilience. Ensuring that library spaces are welcoming and well equipped is particularly important for families who rely on public resources for childcare support, literacy activities, and access to reliable information.
The Friends group has framed the silent bid fundraiser as both a seasonal tradition and a community investment in the library’s future. Residents interested in supporting the effort may place bids in person at the library or send donations to the Friends of the Library at the Cayuga Street address. Funds raised will be directed toward immediate needs and the planned 2026 children’s department renovation, aiming to strengthen local services that serve the county’s youngest residents and their families.
