Storm Lake man arrested after reported sexual assault, held without bond
A 31-year-old Alta man is jailed without bond after a reported sexual assault in Storm Lake led to a felony arrest within a day.

A 31-year-old Alta man is being held without bond after Storm Lake police arrested him less than 24 hours after a reported sexual assault in the 500 block of Cayuga Street.
Authorities identified the suspect as Joshua Quezada, 31, of Alta. Police said they received the complaint on April 22, 2026, about an incident that allegedly happened earlier that day in Storm Lake. Investigators with the Storm Lake Police Department and the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office then reviewed the report before taking Quezada into custody on April 23 at about 4:50 p.m.
Police said the arrest happened without incident in the 800 block of Lake Avenue. Quezada was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail and is charged with Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree, a Class C felony.
Under Iowa Code section 709.4, sexual abuse in the third degree includes a sex act done by force or against the will of the other person. The charge now moves into the county court system, where the case will continue as a felony matter.
The arrest adds another serious case to the local docket in a county seat where the numbers are small and the impact can be immediate. Storm Lake had a population of 11,269 in the 2020 census, and Buena Vista County had 20,823 residents, making a violent or sexual-assault allegation especially visible in a close-knit community.
The case also reflects the coordinated response that local agencies have used in other Storm Lake sexual-assault investigations. Earlier local reporting has documented a Sexual Assault Response Team involving the Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office, the Storm Lake Police Department, the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Centers Against Abuse & Sexual Assault, and MercyOne Child Advocacy Center.
For people who need help after a sexual assault, local support can come through Centers Against Abuse & Sexual Assault, emergency medical care through Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, and law enforcement through the Storm Lake Police Department or the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office. Immediate danger should be reported by calling 911.
The investigation remains tied to the 500 block of Cayuga Street, the arrest was made on Lake Avenue, and the defendant remains in custody as the felony case advances in Buena Vista County.
