Storm Lake reminds residents of snow removal rules and safety
The City of Storm Lake posted a winter reminder on December 29, 2025 outlining local snow and ice removal responsibilities and safety rules for residents. The notice clarified sidewalk clearing timelines, limits on snow removal practices, parking rules during snow emergencies, and snowmobile restrictions that affect walking routes, business access, and street maintenance in Buena Vista County.

City officials in Storm Lake issued a clear notice on December 29, 2025 setting out responsibilities for property owners, contractors, and drivers as winter storms move through Buena Vista County. The announcement emphasized that keeping sidewalks clear and streets passable is a shared obligation that directly affects pedestrian safety, school commutes, public services, and emergency access.
Under the city rules property owners are required to clear sidewalks adjacent to their property within 72 hours after a storm. Residents were asked not to shovel snow back into the street or onto a neighbor's property. The notice also reminded snow removal companies that they are prohibited from pushing snow across streets or depositing it on other properties. Those practices can create hazards for drivers and pedestrians and complicate public plowing efforts across the city.
The city warned that when a Snow Emergency is declared owners of vehicles must move them off city streets so plows can clear more than 100 lane miles of roadway. Vehicles left on streets during such an emergency are subject to towing. The requirement is aimed at allowing crews to reach major and residential routes efficiently, and at reducing the need for repeated passes that slow snow clearance and winter maintenance.
Storm Lake also reiterated rules for recreational snowmobile use. Snowmobiles are not allowed on sidewalks, park property, the golf course, or high traffic streets. The city directed residents to stormlake.org for the full text of snowmobile regulations and additional winter guidance.
The reminder carries practical implications for households, local businesses, delivery services, and municipal operations across Buena Vista County. Clearing walkways promptly reduces slip and fall risks for older adults and children and helps mail and emergency personnel reach homes. For contractors and residents alike compliance avoids fines and towing costs while supporting faster, safer plow operations. As winter continues, residents are encouraged to review the full municipal guidance at stormlake.org and plan ahead for snow removal needs.
