Wind pushes out-of-control grassland burn south of Storm Lake, crews respond
Winds over 20 mph pushed a conservation burn out of control along the Buena Vista-Sac County line, sending smoke to Storm Lake and pulling in three departments.

Smoke from a conservation burn south of Storm Lake spread fast enough Wednesday afternoon to pull in three fire departments and keep crews on scene for nearly two hours. Winds topping 20 mph pushed the smoke north, and by the time responders reached the grassland along the Buena Vista-Sac County line, they found active fire across a wide stretch of ground.
Storm Lake Fire Department personnel made the initial attack, trying to stop the flames before they could move onto more grassland or threaten nearby property. The burn area was broad, and the rough terrain made it harder for crews to get where they needed to be quickly. That led the department to call for help from the Newell Fire Department and the Early Fire Department, turning what started as a planned land-management burn into a multi-agency response.
The fire did not result in reported injuries or structural damage, but the response showed how quickly conditions can change when dry grass, open ground and high winds come together. Smoke from the fire was visible as far away as Storm Lake, a reminder that a burn on the county line can affect more than the land where it starts. For rural landowners, the episode underscored how fast a controlled burn can escape when wind picks up. For drivers, drifting smoke near farm roads and county highways can reduce visibility in a hurry.

Crews remained on scene until they had the fire fully extinguished nearly two hours later. That length of time matters because it shows how much effort can be required to contain a fire that begins as a conservation tool but turns unpredictable once the wind shifts. In northwest Iowa, where spring burns are common, the difference between a successful burn and a county-level emergency can come down to speed, access and weather. Wednesday’s response left that lesson plain along the Buena Vista-Sac County line.
