Arnolds fund scholarship for Itawamba transfers to Delta State

Delta State University has a new scholarship aimed squarely at students making the jump from Itawamba Community College to Cleveland. Created by alumni Dr. John Arnold and Janice Arnold, the award is designed to provide financial assistance for eligible transfer students who want to continue their education at Delta State.

The gift carries a personal history that mirrors the route it is meant to support. Dr. Arnold attended Itawamba Community College, transferred to Delta State, earned his bachelor’s degree and stayed connected to the university. Janice Arnold is also a Delta State alumna, turning the scholarship into a family investment in the same transfer pipeline that shaped their own lives.

The scholarship arrives as Delta State and Itawamba Community College deepen their formal partnership. On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, leaders from both schools signed two memorandums of understanding at ICC’s Fulton Campus. Delta State President Dr. Daniel J. Ennis and ICC President Dr. Jay Allen signed the agreements, including one that creates a structured transfer pathway for ICC students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Delta State.

That agreement builds on a message Delta State has been pushing in its admissions materials: transfer students matter, and the university wants the process to be straightforward. Delta State says it works to make sure students receive credit for prior coursework, and Mississippi’s transfer system includes the Mississippi Articulation and Transfer Tool, known as MATT, to help students, administrators, advisors and faculty move credits between institutions.

For Cleveland, the scholarship adds another incentive to keep more community-college students on the path to a four-year degree at Delta State’s campus on Highway 8 West. The university says its student body is nearly 2,800 students and includes students from most U.S. states and more than 45 countries, a reach that gives transfer enrollment outsized importance for classrooms and campus life in the Mississippi Delta.

The affordability piece is just as sharp. Itawamba Community College says more than 80 percent of its students receive some type of scholarships or financial aid, a reminder that transfer students often move through higher education with limited room to absorb new costs. Delta State and ICC have already partnered on a transfer nursing scholarship, signaling that this latest award is part of a broader effort to make community-college-to-university routes more practical for students who want to stay in Mississippi.
