Allen ISD pauses superintendent search, delays permanent hire to 2027

Allen ISD has paused its superintendent search, pushing a permanent hire into 2027 at the earliest and leaving acting Superintendent Kim McLaughlin in charge as the district prepares for the first day of school on Aug. 13. The Board of Trustees will use the coming months to decide how the search should restart, with the process set to resume as soon as fall 2026 or slip into spring 2027 depending on what trustees decide is best for the district.

The pause comes after a fast-moving and then stalled search for one of Collin County’s largest school systems. Former Superintendent Robin Bullock announced her retirement on Jan. 13, 2026, after 13 years in Allen ISD and 31 years in public education. She will stay through the end of the 2025-26 school year. Trustees hired Thompson and Horton in February to run the search, and the district expected to name a lone finalist in May. After vetting the remaining candidates, trustees removed them from consideration.

McLaughlin started as acting superintendent on June 1. She has worked in Allen ISD for 36 years, beginning as a sixth-grade teacher at Story Elementary in 1990 and later serving as an instructional designer, assistant principal and principal at Ereckson Middle School, Olson Elementary and Reed Elementary. She became deputy superintendent in 2023, and the board named her acting superintendent on May 14 as the district moved into the transition.

It has 23 campuses and about 20,117 students in the most recent state enrollment data from Texas Tribune Schools Explorer, with a separate October 2025 snapshot putting enrollment at 20,140. The district has also been dealing with enrollment decline, which raises the stakes for the next superintendent, who will inherit budget decisions, staffing choices, campus-level leadership and long-range planning questions. Allen ISD approved its 2026-27 academic calendar on Oct. 27, 2025.
