Collin County Sheriff Investigates Fraud Reports at Seis Lagos Utility District

The Collin County Sheriff's Office confirmed this week it is actively investigating a phishing scam that targeted the Seis Lagos Utility District, with the agency reporting that a majority of the funds involved have been recovered.

The Sheriff's Office issued a public information release on March 10, 2026, disclosing that it had received multiple fraud reports in January 2026 related to a financial incident at the utility district, commonly known as SLUD. The release marked the first official public acknowledgment of the case.

Seis Lagos is a private, gated community in eastern Collin County, and its utility district manages water and related services for residents there. A phishing scam of this nature typically involves fraudulent communications designed to deceive employees or officials into transferring funds or surrendering financial credentials to bad actors posing as legitimate contacts.

The Sheriff's Office did not specify the total dollar amount targeted in the scheme, nor did it identify any suspects or detail how the phishing attempt was carried out. The agency also did not disclose what portion of the funds remains unaccounted for, saying only that the majority had been recovered.

The gap between January, when the fraud reports were filed, and the March 10 public announcement suggests investigators spent several weeks working the case before going public, a common approach in financial fraud investigations aimed at preserving the integrity of the recovery effort.
