The westbound lane of King Road between Witt Road and Rose Lane shut down at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 19, kicking off the first phase of a long-planned project to transform one of the area's remaining two-lane rural roads into a four-lane urban corridor.

The City of Frisco posted the closure notice the day before, directing westbound drivers to detour south on Witt Road and west on Stonebrook Parkway. Eastbound traffic shifted to the north side of the existing pavement. Detour signs were posted along the route. The westbound closure is expected to last about six months, with the full project targeted for completion by summer 2027.

When finished, King Road will be reconstructed from a two-lane rural road to a four-lane urban road along the stretch between Witt Road and Rose Lane. Denton County describes the project as serving as an extension of Witt Road, a connection that officials from multiple jurisdictions have worked toward together.

Denton County held a groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 25, 2026, to mark the project's start. Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin W. Falconer, whose district encompasses the corridor, emphasized the regional coordination required to get the project to construction. "We recognize how important this reconstruction is for the area, and we're proud to have worked closely with officials from Frisco, Hackberry, and Little Elm to bring it to fruition," Falconer said.

The City of Frisco urged drivers to plan alternate routes before entering the work zone and recommended using the Waze app to navigate live road closures. A PDF map of the closure and detour route is available on FriscoTexas.gov. The city noted that additional announcements will follow as work progresses and traffic patterns shift through the life of the project.
