A mistaken press of the accelerator sent a driver about 30 feet down into a creek bed near Independence Parkway and Plano Parkway, turning a rainy-morning crash into a rope rescue for Plano firefighters. The occupant was pulled out safely, and officials said no injuries were reported.

Plano Fire-Rescue said the driver hit the gas instead of the brake, sending the car off course on slick roads early Saturday, April 18. CBS Texas said the vehicle was heavily damaged, but crews were able to reach the car in the creek bed and bring the driver out without injury.

Rain across North Texas made the scene more dangerous. Showers were expected to continue through most of Saturday morning before conditions dried out later in the day, but the water on the pavement was enough to make a familiar Plano intersection hazardous in seconds. A mistake that might have ended as a minor fender bender on dry pavement became a specialized emergency response once the car dropped into the creek area.

The rescue also pointed to the kind of work Plano Fire-Rescue trains for beyond fires and medical calls. The department’s Emergency Services division includes Special Operations and Training, the sections that handle technical rescues like rope work and other unusual emergencies. In this case, firefighters used a rope rescue system to get the occupant out of the creek bed quickly and without further injury.

Plano has seen the worst-case version of this kind of crash before. On May 23, 2025, FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth reported a separate Plano wreck in which a driver died after a vehicle left the roadway and landed in a creek on West Plano Parkway near Independence Boulevard. The contrast between the two incidents shows how narrow the margin can be when roads run wet along creek crossings and drainage channels.

For drivers across Collin County, the rescue carried a clear warning: rain does not have to be extreme to create life-threatening conditions. A slick turn, a wrong-footed pedal press and a drop into a creek bed can quickly turn an ordinary drive into a technical rescue.
